Color

Maroon aka Red. NOTES: Bright red lava no longer exists. Some bags of bright red lava can be found at big box stores. These bags often contain brown lava rock that has been dyed. This Dye may affect your plants and wildlife. This can be verified by washing a bag in your drive and checking for red concrete stains. You hear stories of people installing red lava that mysteriously turns brown after one season because the dye rinses away over time. All of our products are natural and have not been dyed. We crush our own lava. This is the true test of color. If the inside and outside colors match we know its natural.

  1. Question

    Kara

I’ve been looking to use a top dressing on my succulents other than pebbles or rocks– I like that Monto Clay shows when it is dry. Does lava rock (red or black) have the same effect? What about bonsai block? Thanks!

Hello Kara. The top layer of soil will always be dry. You want to monitor what is happening just beneath the top layer. Black lava and maroon lava will be darker when wet. I hope this makes sense.

      Have a great weekend.

I have used both the red AND the black lava as top dressing (to very attractive effect) quite successfully. I HIGHLY reccommend these products from BonsaiJack

  2. Question

    Monica (verified owner)

I bought this product about a month ago. I’m in an apartment so I just stowed the bag with my remaining lava rock in a closet and I just realized it has a lot of moisture in it. Can I keep the lava rock or is it somehow bad now? How should I be storing it?

      Hello Monica,

Thanks for the email. Every product ships with a little bit of our famous Florida humidity. This will not affect the soil performance in any way. All products are bagged fresh the day it ships. Condensation will stick to the bag more than the product. It’s a good idea to let the soil crispen in the sun, or leave the bag partially open to breathe, if you plan on storing it for more than a year.

We do not dry fire our product before shipping. This eliminates dust and keeps the soil clean after the wash process.

I hope this helps. Please call or email with questions or concerns
